Donald Trump dominated the headlines Thursday after Pope Francis criticized his call to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.

"A person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not of building bridges, is not Christian," the pontiff said.

In tonight's On the Record interview, Trump told Greta Van Susteren that he was "shocked" to hear the comments by the pope, whom he called "a terrific person."

"To me, it’s illegal immigration. I don’t think the pope really understood in terms of the crime problem and the problems of illegal immigration," said Trump.

Tonight's comment comes after Trump responded to the pope's statement by saying "no leader...should have the right to question another man's religion or faith." He also said that Pope Francis was being played like a pawn by the Mexican government.

The Vatican clarified today that Francis' remark was "in no way a personal attack or an indication on how to vote."
