High School Musical actress Vanessa Hudgens is in hot water for an Instagram picture that showed potential evidence of her defacing a prized landmark.

TMZ reported that Hudgens and boyfriend Austin Butler are being investigated after posting a picture online that showed "Austin + Vanessa" carved into red stone while the pair were visiting Arizona's Sedona mountains.

The picture was posted on Valentine's Day with others showing the Grease: Live star and her boyfriend posing in front of the iconic rock formation.

"Happy Valentine's Day boo boo bears," the caption read.

Instagram commenters seized on the possibility that Hudgens and her boyfriend could have committed a crime with the etching.

The picture has since been removed, with no comment from Hudgens.

The red rocks lie within the Coconino National Forest, so the potential defacing happened on federal land.

A spokesperson for the Coconino National Forest Red Rock District confirmed to ABC 15 that the incident is under investigation, but could not provide any additional details.

The maximum penalty would be a $5,000 fine or six months in jail, the spokesperson said.
