Is not doing your chores a crime?

That’s the question at play in a bizarre case now coming out of Italy, where a woman awaits trial for not cooking and cleaning enough.

Local media reports that the woman’s husband is taking her to court for “poor management of the household chores.”

That woman, an unidentified 42-year-old from the countryside village of Sonnino, now faces up to six years behind bars.

Her husband, 47, “claimed he had been ‘insulted’ for over two years by his wife's negligence,” The Local newspaper reported.

He also reportedly said that “on occasion, his wife has kicked him out of their bedroom and that he has been ‘forced to live in conditions with poor hygiene.’”

“Mistreatment within the family” is said to be a crime in Italy.

The statute applies to “whoever mistreats a person in their family or a person entrusted to them for reasons of education, care or custody.”
