A Tennessee family says doctors mistakenly performed surgery on their new baby boy, WTVF reported.

Jennifer Melton delivered a healthy baby, named Nate, at University Medical Center in Lebanon.

Shortly after she met her son, nurses took Nate for what Jennifer thought was a routine check-up.

She was horrified to learn a few hours later that a "clipped tongue" procedure had been performed.

The surgery was carried out despite no consent form being signed by the parents. The procedure was supposed to have been done on a different baby.

WTVF-TV in Nashville reported

"Essentially they took our child who was healthy from the room and cut his mouth," said Melton. "At that point I began to cry hysterically."

"There is no excuse on operating on the wrong baby, none," said Melton's attorney Clint Kelly.

Kelly said the doctor performed a Frenulectomy, which is the cutting a flap of skin from under the child's tongue.

The procedure is a treatment for infants born with a condition that restricts the tongue's range of motion, but little Nate's tongue was normal.

The doctor reportedly admitted to asking for the wrong baby and apologized for the error.

The family is now concerned that the procedure may cause Nate to have speech or eating problems.
