A Virginia firefighter saved the day Tuesday morning after a dog fell into an icy pond.

Sharing details of the dramatic rescue online, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office said the large yellow Lab had broken through the ice and was stranded about 50 feet from shore.

The pooch was desperately barking for help after the first deputy arrived on the scene.

When firefighters arrived soon after, they extended a ladder across the ice and had an officer crawl out toward the dog.

As more ice began to crack, Firefighter Aaron Lovell fell into the water but was able to reach the shivering lab and bring him to safety.

The dog was taken for treatment and reportedly released.
