'It's Bizarre': Jasser Slams Obama for Choosing to Visit Baltimore Mosque
Dr. Zuhdi Jasser said this morning that President Obama is making a "bizarre" decision by choosing to visit a Baltimore mosque that he sees as being radical.
Obama will visit a Muslim mosque in the United States for the first time as president when he goes to the Islamic Society of Baltimore today.
Since the news came out last week, questions have been raised about the mosque's former imam.
The former imam in question is Mohamad Adam El-Sheikh, who served at the Baltimore mosque from 1983-1989 and 1994-2003. A member of the Muslim Brotherhood in Sudan, he had moved to the U.S. in 1978 and went on to receive several advanced law degrees as he became involved in the religious community.
During his time in Baltimore, El-Sheikh was a regional director for the Islamic American Relief Agency, the international parent organization of which has been cited by the U.S. Treasury Department for connections to Al Qaeda and the Taliban. After 2003, he was the imam for the Dar Al-Hijrah Islamic Center in Falls Church, Va., near Washington. It was there that Awlaki, just months earlier, gave his fiery sermons, before going on to be a top Al Qaeda affiliate operative in Yemen. Awlaki, a U.S. citizen, was killed in a U.S. drone strike in 2011.
Jasser, an author and founder of the The American-Islamic Forum for Democracy, said he believes Obama is using Muslims as a "political prop."
Jasser said this mosque is "heaped in Salafism and ideology that is really incompatible with Western identity."
He noted that a sermon at the mosque a few years ago featured a speaker who called homosexuals "deviants" and claimed they have a "mental disorder."
"He's basically using Muslims as a prop, who disagree with his own liberal values. It's bizarre," he explained, adding that the president should have chosen a mosque with more modern views.
"He's cozying up to those who may preach against violence, but they're preaching ideology that's on a conveyor belt toward radicalism," said Jasser.
