WATCH: Megyn Grills Cruz & Rubio on Past Statements on Illegal Immigration
At the GOP debate tonight in Iowa, Megyn Kelly challenged Senators Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz on their past statements on illegal immigration.
Playing past remarks and interviews from both, she specifically called out the fact that Cruz supported illegal immigrants gaining a "legal status" but not citizenship.
She said that Cruz has recently argued, however, that he never supported legalization.
Cruz said he introduced a series of amendments to a 1,000-page bill and maintained that he never supported any amnesty.
Kelly pressed Rubio on past statements in which he forcefully denounced amnesty before co-sponsoring a bill that would have offered a path to citizenship.
"Haven't you already proven that you cannot be trusted on this issue?" she asked.
Rubio said that in the old clips he was talking about "blanket amnesty" and that the legislation he supported did not propose that.
The back-and-forths prompted Chris Christie to call out the senators for their apparent double-speak on the issue.
"I feel like I need a Washington-to-English dictionary converter. I heard what they both said. I saw it on the video," he said.
He said if a governor changes their mind, they have to admit it, while senators can "hide behind parliamentary tricks."
