Fiery Rubio Slams Cruz: 'You'll Say Anything to Get Votes'
At tonight’s Fox News-Google GOP debate in Des Moines, Iowa, Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio called each other out on their respective records on illegal immigration.
“The facts are very simple,” said Cruz.
“When that battle was waged, my friend Sen. Rubio chose to stand with Barack Obama and Harry Reid and Chuck Schumer and support amnesty. And I stood alongside Jeff Sessions and Steve King, and we led the fight against amnesty.”
The Texas senator said that while he “honored” his commitments, Rubio went in the direction he deemed “politically advantageous.”
Rubio responded: “This is the lie that Ted’s campaign is built on … that he’s the most conservative guy, and everyone else is a RINO.”
“The truth is, Ted,” said the Florida senator, “throughout this campaign, you’ve been willing to do or say anything to get votes.” The crowd broke out in boos.
Rubio pressed on, referencing Cruz’s previous remarks on illegal immigration and saying that Cruz is hoping “to trump Trump on immigration.”
“But we’re not going to beat Hillary Clinton with someone who’s willing to do or say anything to win an election,” he declared.
