See Focus Group's Positive Reaction to Nikki Haley's SOTU Rebuttal
To get reaction to President Obama's final State of the Union address and South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley's Republican rebuttal, Frank Luntz put together a focus group of Democratic and Republican voters.
Luntz said that Haley's speech received an exceedingly positive response, in particular when she took responsibility for both political parties and their failure to work together.
"We need to be honest with each other and with ourselves," Haley said. "While Democrats in Washington bear much responsibility for the problems facing America today, they do not bear it alone. There is more than enough blame to go around."
"We, as Republicans, need to own that truth. We need to recognize our contributions to the erosion of the public trust in America's leadership. We need to accept that we've played a role in how and why our government is broken."
Luntz revealed that the focus group responded more positively to those comments than anything else Haley said during her rebuttal.
What stood out to you? Luntz asked the participants.
One man explained that there is so much gridlock in Washington because everyone blames each other, and no one is actually getting things done.
"I feel a lot of the problem is a total lack of transparency on both sides," one woman added.
Who's mad at everybody? Luntz asked, as the majority of participants raised their hands.
"Ok, Washington, take a look," Luntz said.
