A Texas mother says her daughter was kicked off an elite cheerleading squad because her hair is curly.

But cheer officials said it was because of the mother's "negativity" and unwillingness to compromise.

Woodlands Elite Cheer told 11-year-old Makayla Fallaw she needed to straighten her hair to match the hairstyles of her teammates.

Her mother Jenny met with officials to explain that straightening "would destroy her hair."

Team director Kevin Tonner said they attempted to find "a happy medium."

He told ABC News that they showed her how to straighten her hair without damaging it, and that she would only have to keep it straight during competitions, where it counted for points.

But Jenny wouldn't listen, and so they asked her to leave.

"It wasn't about hair. It was about we don't want this negativity on our team,” Tonner said.

Jenny said she was not about to compromise on her daughter's natural beauty.

She plans to send her daughter to another cheer team.
