Police Dog Stabbed After Tracking Down Suspect & Saving Deputy's Life
A Louisiana police dog was stabbed yesterday after he chased down a suspected burglar.
The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office said the incident began Tuesday afternoon when a homeowner reported two men had robbed her house and provided a description of their getaway car.
After deputies tracked down the vehicle, the men fled on foot. One suspect was quickly arrested, but it took hours to find the second suspect.
The K-9 officer, Thor, eventually tracked him down in a barn and the suspect tried to attack an officer with a knife.
Authorities said the Belgian Malinois instinctively placed himself in between the deputy and the attacker.
The man, who has not been identified, stabbed Thor in the neck and chest before he was fatally shot by police.
"We believe the K-9 saved that deputy's life,'' said St. Tammany Sheriff Jack Strain.
The sheriff’s office asked for people to pray for Thor as he underwent emergency surgery and a blood transfusion last night. They said doctors are hopeful that he will recover.
This is actually not the first time Thor has made headlines. He helped out deputies in Aug. 2014 when they arrested a man who had become known in the area as the "Spider-Man burglar."
The suspect earned the nickname for climbing onto roofs of homes to make entry.
UPDATE, 2:00p ET: Here are the latest pictures of Thor, just posted this afternoon by the sheriff's office. They say he's "down and out" but appears to be doing better.
We'll have more updates here as we get them.
