A student's request for some gum caused a security scare at a Texas high school, KVUE-TV reported

A classmate reportedly overheard the word "gum" and mistook it for "gun."

In response, the school decided to hold all students in their class periods for an extended time until the investigation was over.

In a statement to parents, the Hays County CISD said they take all concerns seriously:

The safety of our students is always foremost on our list of priorities, so we take these concerns seriously. We continue to encourage students to report anything they see or hear that causes them concern. Fortunately, in this case, it was a misunderstanding and there was no threat to our school or need to conduct a lock down.
