A jaw-dropping moment was caught on tape off the coast of California, as a cruise ship passenger recorded a humpback whale breaching just feet from two kayakers.

The video, posted by Sanctuary Cruises yesterday, was shot off of Moss Landing, near Monterey.

It was a tense few seconds, as the kayakers disappeared into the water. Though the kayak was toppled by the huge splashdown, the couple was not hurt.

The description on YouTube said, "We stopped to see a large aggregation of humpbacks feeding and carrying on with random acts of hijinks. There were also a lot of kayakers right in the middle of it all. Humpbacks were coming up next to and in the middle of many kayakers. It was amusing. It's all fun and games until someone gets jumped on."
