Kate Steinle’s family today announced that they will sue local and federal officials in the wake of their daughter’s death.

Authorities say that Steinle, 32, was fatally shot on a San Francisco pier by an illegal immigrant with a long rap sheet.

Her family is now alleging that the lack of oversight of several agencies led to Steinle’s murder.

The Steinle family is suing the San Francisco sheriff, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and the Bureau of Land Management. They claim that the sheriff circumnavigated federal law on immigration and that ICE should have removed the suspect from the country. They also allege that the Bureau of Land Management improperly took care of the handgun that killed Steinle.

Brad Steinle said in a tearful speech today that the system failed his sister.

“We feel as though we’ve exhausted avenues, we’re frustrated, and we’re here to make sure that a change is made so nobody has to endure pain that my mom and dad and I go through on a daily basis because the system failed our sister,” he said.
