Florida Deputy in Critical, Unstable Condition After Shootout
A Florida deputy is in critical condition after a shootout late last night.
Authorities say that deputies were investigating complaints about prostitution in Port St. John. They were approaching a house to make an arrest when someone on the property fired at police.
Agent John “Casey” Smith and suspect John Franklin Derossett were both shot during the exchange of gunfire, police say.
The deputy is in critical and unstable condition after undergoing surgery, while the suspect is in stable condition at a nearby hospital.
Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey asked for prayers for the wounded deputy in a post on Facebook.
“Our BCSO family is standing strong with his wife and children as we all face this difficult time together,” he said. “We are extremely grateful for the overwhelming number of calls we have received from our citizens who have offered their thoughts and prayers for his recovery. I want to personally thank and commend the actions of Brevard County Fire Rescue who without question gave our Deputy a chance to survive through their life saving actions.”
