Megyn Kelly asked Dr. Ben Carson at the Fox News GOP debate tonight what he would do to help race relations in the U.S. if he was elected president.

Carson said he was once asked by a reporter why he didn't discuss race more often. He answered that he didn't because he was a neurosurgeon, which the reporter thought was an odd response.

He explained that when he took someone to the operating room, he was operating on the thing that makes them who they are: the brain.

"The skin doesn't make them who they are. The hair doesn't make them who they are. And it's time for us to move beyond that," Carson said. "Our strength comes from our unity. We are the United States of America, not the divided states."

"Those who want to destroy us are trying to divide us, and we shouldn't let them do it."
