It may have taken 71 years, but a World War II veteran has finally received his high school diploma.

After finishing his sophomore year, Russell Whittaker left Mound Westonka High School in Mound, Minn., in 1944 to enlist in the U.S. Navy.

He served on a minesweeper in the Philippines during the final year of World War II and was honorably discharged in 1947.

During the July 13 Westonka School District board meeting, Whittaker, 88, was presented with an honorary diploma.
