Caught on Camera: Selfie Stick Used in Riptide Rescue
A GoPro camera on a selfie stick captured a scary rip current rescue in Nantucket, Mass.
Erynn Johns, 16, was in the ocean with her selfie stick when she was swept away by a powerful rip current. Her quick-thinking Marine father Derrick Johns grabbed the selfie stick and used it to pull Erynn closer to the shore, but got pulled into the riptide himself.
"It was literally tearing us from the shore, hard as it could," Derrick told MyFoxBoston.com.
Good Samaritans and lifeguards then rescued Derrick and his wife, who also battled the rip current.
Derrick only had about 20 seconds of oxygen left when he was rescued.
Lifeguards have rescued about 75 people from riptides in the last few days.
