An Illinois car collector is trying to save a piece of “Dukes of Hazzard” history.

Volo Auto Museum director Brian Grams wants to buy the first General Lee 01 car from its current owner, professional golfer Bubba Watson, who plans to paint over the Dodge Charger’s Confederate flag design.

Watson tweeted last week that he will paint an American flag over the Confederate flag, which is currently emblazoned on the car’s roof.

While Grams said he understands the sensitivity of the issue, he said that history shouldn’t be erased. Rather, he feels the car should be preserved in his museum.

Grams explained that the museum would make a fair offer for the General Lee 01, which Watson purchased for $121,000.

Grams said that Watson is aware of his offer, but that he hasn’t heard from the golfer yet.
