'It's a Blessing': 9/11 First Responder Wins $5M from Scratch-Off
A retired firefighter who responded to the 9/11 terror attacks has struck it rich.
Carmelo Mercado, 63, of Harriman, N.Y., won $5 million from a scratch-off lottery ticket.
Mercado was a member of Astoria’s Battalion 49 and rushed to the scene of the World Trade Center following the Sept. 11 attacks.
The former firefighter said he was shocked when he realized he won the lottery.
"It's a blessing," he said.
Mercado, who will take home $3.3 million after taxes, says he plans to take a cruise, treat his daughter to 10 American Girl dolls, and buy a summer home in Florida.
