England Player's Devastating Own Goal Sets Up US-Japan Rematch
The United States women will face Japan in the World Cup final after an absolutely stunning turn of events in last night's semifinal match.
The match was tied in stoppage time when England's Laura Bassett deflected a cross into her own net, giving the Japanese team a 2-1 victory.
In the 92nd minute, Japan's Nahomi Kawusumi played a cross into the box, where a teammate was waiting.
Bassett darted in front of the ball and attempted to clear it over her net. But instead, her deflection glanced off the bar and the ball just barely crossed the line.
The gaffe left Bassett in tears on the field. It was the first time England had advanced to the semifinal round.
The American squad will take on Japan Sunday night in a rematch of the 2011 final, won by Japan on penalty kicks.
