A 68-year-old man was viciously attacked by a shark in North Carolina this afternoon.

The man was in waist-deep water on Ocracoke Island when he was attacked by a shark, suffering bites on his side, hip, left leg and both hands.

Fox 8 reported:

A lifeguard called 911, an emergency worker said. The victim, who was taken out of the water, was airlifted off the island to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.

Hyde County officials said the attack happened around 12:10 p.m. at the National Park Service Day Use Area on Ocracoke.

There is no word on the victim’s condition.

This is the seventh shark attack to occur this month in North Carolina.
