Authorities are defending a San Diego police officer after video surfaced which shows him deploying a Taser on a 13-year-old boy.

Witnesses say that the teen was riding a skateboard behind a Fallbrook shopping center when Deputy Jeffery Banks approached him and started hitting him.

But San Diego County Sheriff William Gore said that Banks was sent to get the teen, who had been reported missing by his mother. Gore said that Banks repeatedly asked the 13-year-old boy to get in his car, but the teen bit him instead.

Gore claimed that Banks then “deployed his Taser in an effort to take control of the juvenile.”

The teen has been charged with resisting arrest with injury to a deputy officer.

Banks will not be placed on administrative leave.
