FBI Says It Sent Bulletin on Gunman Hours Before Texas Attack
The FBI says it had intelligence in the hours before the Muhammad cartoon contest attack that suspected gunman Elton Simpson was headed to Garland, Texas.
The FBI says it alerted local police there. But Texas authorities say police at the event had not been told to be on the lookout for Simpson.
“I know there are other Elton Simpsons out there,” FBI Director James Comey said yesterday, warning that thousands of people across the U.S. could be under the influence of ISIS.
Comey explained that people are being radicalized by ISIS through social media.
“The siren song sits in the pockets on the mobile phones of the people who are followers on Twitter,” Comey said. “It’s almost as if there’s a devil sitting on the shoulder, saying ‘Kill, kill, kill, kill’ all day long […] In a way, the old paradigm between ‘inspired’ and ‘directed’ breaks down here."
