Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler (R-Wash.) is championing a cause in Congress after her miracle baby was born without kidneys.

Herrera Beutler’s daughter, Abigail, had a 100-percent fatal diagnosis before she was born. Doctors told Herrera Beutler that no baby had ever survived her condition.

“Through a lot of prayers and some brave doctors, she was born,” Herrera Beutler said, adding that Abigail is now 21 months and “doing fabulously.”

Herrera Beutler said her husband will give Abigail a kidney, hopefully this fall.

“I am the happiest and most exhausted mom in the world,” she said.

Herrera Beutler is now pushing for the ACE Kids Act, which would allow children on Medicaid to see specialists in other states. She explained that states can opt in, but the bill wouldn’t force them.

The bill is awaiting a vote in the House and Senate.
