Authorities: IU Student's Murder Eerily Similar to Lauren Spierer Case
Investigators say they will likely reexamine the unsolved 2011 disappearance of an Indiana University student after a student from the same school was found dead Friday.
Authorities say that friends sent 22-year-old Hannah Wilson home alone in a cab after a night out drinking at Kilroy's Sports Bar. Her body was found in a vacant lot several hours later.
Daniel Messel, 49, has been arrested and charged in her death after authorities found his cellphone at the scene and blood in his car.
Now, investigators are looking into a possible link between the suspect and 20-year-old Lauren Spierer, an Indiana University student who vanished in 2011 after a night at Kilroy’s Sports Bar – the same bar Wilson visited on the night of her death. Spierer was never found.
Authorities say the two cases are eerily similar.

The Spierer family says they’ve never given up hope–more than three years later, they maintain active social media pages to show they’re as determined as day one. They’re also taking the time to pray for the Wilson family. Lauren’s mother, Charlene Spierer, released a statement saying, “The news about Hannah Wilson is terribly heartbreaking and tragic for the Wilson family. Our sincere thoughts and prayers go to Hannah’s family and friends.”
Bloomington police will work with state police who are leading the investigation into Hannah’s death to look over those similarities. What investigators find will determine how they’ll proceed with looking at the Spierer case again.
