Baltimore Police Capt. Eric Kowalczyk, the department's chief spokesman, said during a press conference that at least seven officers were injured during a violent clash with protesters near the city's Mondawmin Mall.

The injuries included broken bones and one of the officers was "unresponsive," according to Kowalczyk.

"We're going to go back and do an investigation," Kowalczyk said. "And we will find the people that are responsible and we will put them in jail."

Kowalczyk added that it is a large group of "lawless individuals" with no regard for the safety of the community or police officers.

"Right now our focus is making sure that the people [who] live in that community are safe and that our officers are safe," Kowalczyk said.

"You're going to see tear gas, you're going to see pepper balls," Kowalczyk said. "We're going to use appropriate methods to ensure that we're able to preserve the safety of that community."
