Montel Williams went "On The Record" to blast the Obama administration's efforts to free a former U.S. Marine who has been held in an Iranian prison for more than three years and to ask viewers for help.

Sgt. Amir Hekmati, an Iranian-American with dual citizenship, was arrested while on a trip to Iran to see his ailing grandmother and accused of being an American spy, convicted on a lesser charge and sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Montel told Greta Van Susteren that her exclusive interview with Amir's parents and family members - in which they revealed that Amir's father is dying of a brain tumor - showed just how desperately help is needed.

He called on viewers to donate to the Free Amir Hekmati Now Fund and to spread the word about Amir's plight by using #FreeAmirNow on social media.

Montel said that help is needed particularly because the Obama administration isn't doing enough to help Amir. He called out White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest for not referring to hostages like Amir by name, just as "people" or "Americans."

"They should be calling them by name, making sure that they're identified every day, so we all remember that right now while we enjoy this democracy and our freedom, it was paid for by the likes of people like Amir and soldiers like Amir. And we need to pay back," Montel said.

"We can make a difference. We can do this."

Although Montel is critical of the White House's reaction to Amir's imprisonment, he praised the bipartisan support from lawmakers like Rep. John Boehner (R-OH) and Rep. Dan Kildee (D-MI).

"The bipartisan support that’s coming on right now for Amir could be something that could be spring-boarded in the discussions for other issues. I mean, why can’t we sit down and have a conversation just about a Marine and that Marine might do what it does all the time, that’s galvanize a nation and bring us together to solve some other issues."
