A white South Carolina police officer has been charged with murdering a black man after chilling video of the shooting surfaced.

Michael Thomas Slager has been arrested and charged in the death of 50-year-old Walter Lamer Scott.

Authorities say it all happened after Slager stopped Scott for a broken tail light.

An attorney for Slager claims he felt threatened and that Scott was trying to grab Slager’s stun gun. But the video below appears to show that Slager shot at the fleeing victim multiple times before he fell to the ground.

The Department of Justice said in a statement, "The South Carolina Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation has opened an investigation concurrent with the S.C. Law Enforcement Division and are providing aid as necessary to the state investigation. The Department of Justice Civil Rights Division and the South Carolina U.S. Attorney's Office will work with the FBI in the investigation. The Department of Justice will take appropriate action in light of the evidence and developments in the state case."

The footage, which The Post and Courier obtained Tuesday from a source who asked to remain anonymous, shows the end of the confrontation between the two on Saturday after Scott ran from a traffic stop. It was the first piece of evidence that could contradict a statement that Slager released earlier this week through his attorney.

Mayor Keith Summey said during a news conference that Slager’s “bad decision” had prompted his arrest.

“When you’re wrong, you’re wrong,” Summey said. “If you make a bad decision, don’t care if you’re behind the shield or just a citizen on the street, you have to live by that decision.”

Attorney David Aylor, who released a statement on Slager’s behalf earlier this week, said Tuesday that he wasn’t representing the officer anymore.

It was not immediately clear whether Slager had hired a new lawyer.
