The top official at the Department of Veterans Affairs' hospital in San Juan, Puerto Rico, was absent from work 80 days in a one-year period, but he was still paid $179,700 of taxpayer money, according to a report.

DeWayne Hamlin handed off his responsibilities to coworkers on approximately one in three business days over that period.

Throughout 2013 and 2014, Hamlin took multiple absences, sometimes missing a day and other times a full week. He skipped nearly 100 days over the 14 months ending in June 2014.

A VA spokesperson said that they "reviewed this matter in 2014 and found that Mr. Hamlin's attendance was in conformance with applicable rules and regulations."
