'A Totalitarian Impulse': Judge Nap Slams the Idea of Mandatory Voting
President Barack Obama yesterday floated the idea of mandatory voting while speaking in Cleveland, Ohio.
“In Australia and some other countries, there’s mandatory voting,” Obama said. “It would be transformative if everybody voted.”
Judge Andrew Napolitano slammed the idea as “a totalitarian impulse.”
“Voting is speech […] you have the right to free speech, the corollary to free speech is you have the right to remain silent. The government cannot force speech, the government cannot force voting,” he said.
Napolitano added that many people exercise their right to vote by not voting.
