Investigators say a University of Illinois at Chicago student accused of sexual assault told them that he and the victim were re-enacting scenes from the film "Fifty Shades of Grey."

19-year-old Mohammad Hossain is charged with aggravated criminal sexual assault after the sexual encounter in his dorm room Saturday evening.

Trace Gallagher reported on "Shepard Smith Reporting" that Hossain allegedly tied the 19-year-old female victim's hands and feet to the bed, put a knit cap over her eyes, covered her mouth with a necktie and struck her with a belt.

Gallagher said that prosecutors claim that Hossain continued to strike the woman despite her pleas to stop, and he proceeded to sexually assault her.

Police also say that Hossain held his dorm room door closed so that his roommate couldn't enter the room to stop the assault, Gallagher reported.

"He admitted assaulting the woman and doing something wrong, but claims they were simply re-enacting 'Fifty Shades of Grey,'" Gallagher said, noting the hit film contains bondage and S&M.

Critics have argued that the film glorifies sexual violence.

Hossain's public defender said her client believed the encounter was consensual. She listed his many accolades and extracurricular activities, which led the judge to ask, "How can someone involved in all that let a movie persuade him to do something like this?"

Hossain is being held on $500,000 bail.
