Philadelphia firefighters found themselves battling both flames and ice when a blaze broke out in a building in West Philadelphia early Monday morning.

The Philadelphia Fire Department says the fire was reported just before 4 a.m. in a three-story building that houses the Locust Medical Center.

The two-alarm fire was extinguished after two and a half hours, but bone-chilling temperatures quickly created a new problem: ice.

Water from the fire hoses combined with freezing cold to create ice that covered power lines, utility poles, neighboring buildings, fire department equipment and even the firefighters themselves.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
