An Alabama police officer was arrested after video showed him slamming an Indian man to the ground in a residential neighborhood.

The Madison police officer, Eric Parker, is facing an assault charge after the confrontation was caught by a police car's dash camera.

The police chief said the officer used excessive force and recommended his firing.

Police were called to the area last week after a resident saw Sureshbhai Patel, 57, walking outside his home and found him to be suspicious.

When the officers arrived, Patel could not understand what they were saying.

Patel's son said his father had just recently arrived in the country from India to help care for his grandson.

He said his father sustained severe injuries and was left partly paralyzed.

The police chief said the FBI is looking into the incident and the family has filed a federal lawsuit.
