Charles Krauthammer tonight weighed in on the closing of the U.S. embassy in Yemen.

Embassy vehicles and weapons have reportedly been taken over by Houthi rebels since embassy personnel left.

Krauthammer said that what just happened in Yemen is “sort of humiliating.” He said that the withdrawal was done very quickly with weapons left behind.

He called the situation “a devastating setback.” First, Krauthammer explained that it will make it extremely difficult to hit al Qaeda in Iraq. Second, he said Yemen could become an ally of Iran, since the Houthis are closely supported by Iran. He cautioned that Iran has spoken of turning Yemen into the equivalent of Hezbollah.

Krauthammer explained that Iran is also dominating three Arab capitals in the north.

“You’ve got a surrounding of all the pro-American states […] by Iranian clients. This is a big setback, and it scares the Gulf States to death.”
