Bill Browder, author of "Red Notice: A True Story of High Finance, Murder, and One Man's Fight for Justice," joined Maria Bartiromo on "Sunday Morning Futures" today to discuss the ongoing crisis in Ukraine and how to respond to the aggression of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"Putin started this war," Browder said. "Putin is doing this war for internal Russian domestic reasons. He's trying to distract his own population from his corruption ... this is Putin aggressively attacking [Ukraine] to try to get people stirred up in a nationalist frenzy."

Browder added there's nothing we can do to convince Putin to back down, which means the only thing the West can do is put pressure on him.

Browder asserted that Putin is a criminal, first and foremost, and is running a criminal enterprise to maximize profits.

He explained this it operates much like the mafia, except with all the powers of a sovereign state.

"You have a mafia boss with his finger on a nuclear button," Browder said.
