Firefighters staged a dramatic rescue to save a dog that was spotted floating down the raging Los Angeles River on Friday.

Incredible footage shows a firefighter being lowered from a helicopter into the rain-swollen river, where the dog is struggling to keep its head above water as it is swept downstream.

The firefighter manages to grab the dog from the water, and the helicopter carries them both to safety.

According to a Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman, the dog is OK after the ordeal and is recovering at a shelter. They believe it has an owner, since it had a collar and leash when it was rescued.

In the meantime, firefighters came up with a fitting name for the fortunate pooch: Lucky.
