Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) responded to President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address tonight, calling it “a liberal speech by a liberal president.”

Ryan said that Obama’s tone and tenor were less partisan and divisive than expected. The Wisconsin congressman said that he believes there will be some things that both sides of the aisle can work together on.

Ryan said he hopes that Obama will work with Republicans on the economy. He said that Obama’s economic policies haven’t been effective, and that the president “gussied them up” in tonight’s speech.

“Hardworking taxpayers deserve a break in this country, they’re not getting one, Washington hasn’t been listening to them,” Ryan said.

The former vice presidential nominee also weighed in on 2016 hopefuls, including his former running mate Mitt Romney.
