70 years ago, Joe Demler fought in the bloodiest battle of World War II, the Battle of the Bulge.

During the fierce fighting that claimed nearly 20,000 American lives, Demler was captured by German soldiers.

Now 89-years-old, Demler recounted his time as a German POW, at one point during which he weighed only 70 pounds.

"We had no blankets, no food, no water," Demler said. "What kept me going? The will to live, the desire."

"One thing I learned, I learned to pray. And I learned that every day is a bonus."

Now, Demler is involved with Honor Flight, helping to get thousands of his fellow WWII soldiers to visit the WWII Memorial in Washington, DC.
