“Obviously the situation there is tragic,” he said.

Obama said he has spoken to Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and has expressed condolences on behalf of the United States.

The president said we do not yet have all the information on what motivated the shooting or whether this was part of a plan.

“But it emphasizes the degree to which we have to remain vigilant when it comes to dealing with these kinds of acts of senseless violence or terror, and I pledge as always to make sure that our national security teams are coordinated very closely, given not only is Canada one of our closest allies in the world, but they’re our neighbors and our friends.”

Obama said the U.S. and Canada must be in sync when it comes to terrorist activity, just as they have in the past.
