Haines was believed to have been taken hostage by the Islamic State militant group after being kidnapped from a Syrian refugee camp last year.

The UK Foreign Office told Sky News that they were working to confirm the video.

"We are working urgently to verify the content," the statement said. "If true, this is another disgusting murder. We are offering the family every support possible."

Islamic State militants have already beheaded two American journalists and posted the evidence online in videos. At the end of the last video, they threatened to kill Haines next.

Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond has previously said the British government was doing everything it can to protect Haines.
