At a congressional hearing today in Washington, Director of the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Dr. Tom Frieden was grilled on systematic safety failures within federal public health laboratories, including recent safety lapses with dangerous germs anthrax and bird flu.

“What we’re seeing is a pattern that we missed,” Dr. Frieden said. “And the pattern is an insufficient culture of safety. We’re now implementing every step we can to make sure the problems are addressed comprehensively, in order to protect our own workforce and strengthen the culture and to continue our work protecting Americans.”

Steve Centanni joined Gretchen Carlson on The Real Story and reported, “The Director of the CDC today announced a moratorium on shipping dangerous biological agents until these problems are solved and the temporary closing of two CDC labs where the problems occurred … The CDC will also establish an outside advisory group of experts to help improve safety.”
