Photo: Wounded Soldier Salutes From Hospital Bed

The photo above of wounded Army Ranger Josh Hargis saluting from his hospital bed as he received the Purple Heart went viral.

Hargis was wounded during an attack in Afghanistan that left four members of his team dead. He was hooked up to a breathing tube and doctors thought he was unconscious before he began to raise his hand to salute his commanding officer.

The commander sent the photo, along with a letter, to Hargis' pregnant wife, saying the salute was the "single greatest thing" he had seen in his 10 years in the military.

World War II veterans refused to let the government shutdown stop them from visiting the War Memorial in Washington D.C. last fall.

There was one moment caught on camera that encapsulates the patriotism of America’s greatest generation.

WWII veterans from Mississippi were on an Honor Flight going back home from D.C. when they started singing a powerful rendition of “God Bless America.”


Sanitation Worker Pulls American Flags From Trash to Properly Retire Them

He’s a New York City sanitation worker with a patriotic mission: Ed Shevlin gives tattered American flags a retirement worthy of the values that they stand for.

Shevlin began his campaign last Flag Day and has pulled 817 flags from the garbage in the past year.


Like Father, Like Son: 3-Year-Old Mimics Airman Dad's Salute

Air Force Master Sgt. Jack Duquette was outside his house on Fort Dix in New Jersey standing in salute as the Daily Retreat played on the loudspeakers.

HS Choir Belts Out National Anthem From Hotel Room Balconies

A hotel guest in Louisville recorded the Kentucky All-State Choir singing the national anthem on their hotel room balconies.

Teacher, Groundskeeper Tell Story Behind Patriotic Photo

A Texas middle school teacher named Garrett Hartman snapped this photo of a school groundskeeper putting down his tools to pay his respects during the Pledge of Allegiance.

VIRAL VIDEO: Military Men Chase Down Protesters Flying Upside-Down American Flag

Two New Mexico protesters on a motorized scooter were chased down by a U.S. Marine and another serviceman who were outraged by the protesters' use of an upside-down American flag.

The servicemen quickly caught up with the protesters, knocked the stars and stripes out of the flag bearer's hands and retrieved it from the ground. They then rolled the flag properly.
