O’Reilly’s Immigration Plan ‘Would Show World We’re a Humane Nation, But Not a Soft One’
What should this country do about its illegal immigration crisis? Bill O’Reilly has an immigration reform plan that he detailed in tonight’s Talking Points Memo.
O’Reilly said that President Barack Obama must demand that Mexico police its own borders. This means preventing tens of thousands of illegal aliens from crossing into Mexico from Guatemala, as well as stopping human smugglers and border intruders from crossing into the U.S. On the other side of the border, the American Army should also be patrolling. If Mexico doesn’t cooperate on the border issue, Obama should threaten trade sanctions.
Next, “The Factor” host said that undocumented aliens should have to register at a local post office within three months, providing their name, age, country of origin and U.S. address. If they don’t, it would be a felony and they would go to a federal prison upon conviction.
Once a foreign national registers, O’Reilly said he or she should be sent a tamper-proof ID card and would then apply for working papers.
Under O’Reilly’s plan, these illegal immigrants could eventually apply to be citizens, but would be placed in line behind those who have applied legally.
O’Reilly said that aliens would not be able to receive entitlements, though their children could. The feds would also be able to deport any alien who is undesirable for social or criminal reasons.
“So there’s no amnesty, there’s a vetting process. But there’s also hope that a hardworking honest foreign national might build a life here, but no guarantee.”
O’Reilly said his plan is a fair one, which “would show the world we’re a humane nation, but not a soft one.”

Later, Charles Krauthammer discussed what he believes is the answer to the immigration crisis.
He said that if the nation secures the border, overwhelming numbers of Americans would support legalizing the illegal immigrants already here. Krauthammer said that illegal immigrants should not be given citizenship because they broke the law, but they should be given green cards, the right to work and protection if they pay fines and learn English. The younger generation should be allowed to become legal citizens, he said.
O’Reilly asked him how the U.S. should secure the border.
“You start with a fence, it’s very simple […] If fences don’t work, why is there one around the White House? If they don’t work, why is it that the Israeli fence, which separates Israel from the West Bank, has cut down terror attacks within Israel by 99 percent? Fences work,” Krauthammer said.
