Montel Williams to Obama: Order a Surge for America's Vets
Montel Williams, a retired Navy lieutenant and talk show host, is petitioning the White House to order a surge for America's veterans after widespread problems were reported at VA hospitals across the country.
According to the petition, Williams is calling for:
Declare a public health emergency pursuant to PL 109-364
Order Secretaries of VA, Defense, HHS to present a plan within 10 days to Surge and clear the backlog within 90 days. USE THE SURGE TO DEFINE A BASELINE of what it takes to meet our 14 day commitment.
Order all active duty hospitals, clinics, other Federal facilities open to Veterans.
Please also consider Kenneth Fisher of the Fisher House for VA Secretary.
Williams, who vocalized his outrage over the VA scandal previously on Your World, returned to talk to Neil Cavuto today.
Since his last appearance, Williams said 22 soldiers a day have taken their own lives. He expressed his dismay at possible U.S. intervention in Iraq because of the escalating violence.
“The last 15 days, 22 soldiers a day. We want to go protect someone else’s democracy on the backs of American soldiers […] and deny them treatment when they come home?!” Williams said.
He added, “Some of them have medication issues where they take too much because they have PTSD and they don’t remember what they’re doing. We’re not even protecting these guys from themselves. Yet, again, watch tonight and tomorrow how quickly they line up in Washington D.C. to send more boys off to die.”
Williams clarified that he’s for extracting the Americans in Iraq, but he wants to make sure any U.S. service member who gets injured in the process is guaranteed the help they were promised.
Having spoken to veterans, Williams said their frustration and anger is directed at the president and Congress. He told Cavuto the problem is lack of leadership and officials not being fired for misconduct.
Emphasizing the absurdity of the situation, Williams said, “We got a bigger problem when a group of people can vote themselves a bonus just for keeping track of numbers that they lie about.”
