‘A Tragedy for the Country’: Audit Finds 57K Vets Have Been Waiting 90+ Days for 1st VA Appointment
An audit has found that at least 57,000 veterans have been waiting at least 90 days for their first VA medical appointment.
Another 64,000 who enrolled in VA medical care over the past 10 years have never had appointments. The audit also found 13 percent of VA schedulers reported that supervisors told them to falsify dates to make wait times appear shorter.
“Respondents described a numbers driven system with unrealistic performance measures as having created a highly stressful work environment that limits the focus on serving the veteran,” the audit says.
Indiana Rep. Jackie Walorski, a Republican on the Veterans Affairs Committee, said today on “The Real Story” that the report confirms a systemic problem in the VA.
“This has been a disaster, it’s a tragedy for the country, and I think we have to root out and drill down on this thing and root out these bad actors or we’re going to have this happen all over again no matter who is in the leadership position,” she said.
