Chicago Pediatrician, 2 Others Killed in Insider Attack on Afghan Hospital
A Chicago pediatrician was among three American doctors killed Thursday when an Afghan security guard opened fire at a Kabul hospital. Officials at Lawndale Christian Health Center confirmed the death of Dr. Jerry Umanos, who had practiced pediatrics at the facility.
An American nurse was also wounded. .
The attacker shot himself, but survived the wound and is now in the custody of Afghan authorities. The shooter's motive is unclear to investigators.
The attack occurred at CURE Hospital, which is affiliated with the Christian charity Cure International.
In his report from Jerusalem this afternoon, Conor Powell noted that insider attacks by Afghan police and security forces have become increasingly common in recent years. A few weeks ago, a police officer fatally shot an AP photographer and wounded a reporter.
