Hillary Clinton got a rough welcome to Las Vegas yesterday as she walked on stage to give a speech. As the former secretary of state began her remarks, a shoe flew right past her head causing her to duck as it whizzed by.

A woman was quickly taken into federal custody, while Clinton tried to laugh it off before an audience of about 1,000 people.

"My goodness, I didn't know that solid waste management was so controversial," Clinton said. "Thank goodness she didn't play softball like I did."

Clinton was appearing at the Mandalay Bay for a paid speech to the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries. It's unclear what motivated the woman to throw the shoe at Clinton, but witnesses said she also tossed some papers.

According to FoxNews.com, one of the papers was recovered and later handed over to a reporter. It appeared to be a copy of a Department of Defense document labeled confidential and dated August 1967; it referred to an operation "Cynthia" in Bolivia.

A spokesman for the recycling organization said the woman who was arrested did not have a credential to attend the speech and was not supposed to be in the ballroom.
