Oscar Pistorius broke down in sobs and howls while testifying at his murder trial, forcing the judge to adjourn early on Tuesday.

'I Was Trying to Protect Reeva': Oscar Pistorius Tearfully Apologizes to Dead Girlfriend's Family

Pistorius fatally shot his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp last year at his home in South Africa. The Olympian, known as the Blade Runner, claims he mistook her for an intruder. The prosecution has tried to paint Pistorius as jealous and alleges the couple argued before he killed her.

During dramatic testimony today, Pistorius read text messages with Steenkamp in the months leading up to the shooting.

In one text, Steenkamp wrote, “Every five seconds I hear how you dated another chick. You really have dated a lot of people. Yet you get upset if I mention one funny story with a longtime boyfriend. I do everything to make you happy and to not say anything to rock the boat with you.”

Fox News legal analyst Lis Wiehl said that message feeds into the prosecution’s theory.

Pistorius also recounted how he shouted for Steenkamp to hide under the bed and phone the police. At one point, he took his prosthetic legs off to illustrate the events of the night.

Several weeks ago, a neighbor testified that she heard a woman screaming, but the defense argued that Pistorius screams like a woman. Today in court, he described shouting from the balcony of his house for help after the shooting.

Criminal defense attorney Doug Burns said Pistorius’ argument for self-defense doesn’t hold up under South African law.

Burns said, “Every time he says ‘I thought, I thought it might be,’ it fails the test of reasonably believing his life was in danger.”
