Charles Krauthammer said on tonight’s “Special Report” that the Democratic Party’s push for equal pay is about the midterm elections, calling it “totally rubbish.”

Krauthammer pointed out that the female staffers in the White House earn 88 cents for every dollar that a male makes.

According to Krauthammer, unequal pay is not the direct result of discrimination by any means. He said it has to do with women’s work histories and the “undeniable fact” that women take more time off than men to care for children and relatives, which has a huge impact on earning power over the years.

The executive order issued by the president says that if you can find a disparity in the pay between women and men, then the burden of proof falls on employers to show that they’re not guilty.

“That’s not the American way,” he said.
